Another Source of Equity Capital for SMEs!

Empowering SMEs (Issue 051)

The good news on the equity capital scene for small businesses and medium sized enterprises continues with the Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, confirming that the Federal Government’s election commitment relative to the establishment of the Australian Business Growth Fund official launch is imminent.

This is great news for small businesses and medium sized enterprises because it will make it easier for these enterprises to access equity which will allow these companies to grow and employ more people.

The Government has acknowledged that improved access to equity capital will reduce risks for small businesses and medium sized enterprises because it will reduce reliance on debt funding.

The government anticipates that the Australian Business Growth Fund will approve equity investment in 30 to 50 companies annually.

The targeted companies will have turnovers of between $2 million and $50 million annually.

$520 million will initially be contributed to the Fund by the Government and Banks with a separate Board of Directors and management team being appointed to process all investment applications.

The Fund is expected to launch early in 2020 and therefore if you are interested in making an application for an equity capital investment you will need to ensure that your company has:

  • A “ bankable” Business Plan that articulates your company’s vision for the next three years.
  • Budgets, Cash Flow Forecast and projected Balance Sheet based on the Business Plan for the next three years.
  • Are clearly articulated business vision including strategies and a plan for the execution of those strategies.
  • A Leadership team that understands the challenges of management and is able to work with the company’s Board of Directors relative to the implementation of the policy that has been approved by the board.

Most companies will need assistance from accountants/business advisors who are committed to providing a broad range of commercial advice for their clients.

The launch of the Australian Business Growth Fund supplements the other very significant policy enhancements that the government has made over the last three years to assist small businesses and medium sized enterprises to be able to raise capital direct from the public including:

  • Crowd Sourced Funding Equity Raising
  • Early Stage Innovation Company Capital Raising
  • In conjunction with Section 708 of the Corporations Act capital raising which has been available to small businesses and medium-sized enterprises for the last 35 years
